All-in-one

One PDF editor for every change

Open a PDF in the full editor to change existing text, add text and images, highlight, draw, add shapes, comment, sign, fill in or build forms, redact, and rotate, reorder or delete pages, all in one session. Undo and redo work for every change, and the result is a normal PDF that opens anywhere.

Open the PDF editor
  • 01

    Real text editing

Double-click a line to change the words that are already in the PDF, not just paint over them.

  • 02

    Signatures that stay with you

Type, draw or upload a signature. It's saved in your browser for next time, never on our server.

  • 03

    Proper redaction

Redacted areas are removed from the file itself, so they can't be uncovered by copying or by removing a box.

How WhyShared PDF Tools work

  1. Your browser does the work

Editing, merging, splitting, compressing, OCR, passwords and PDF-to-Office conversions run on your device with WebAssembly. The file is read from your disk and the result is saved straight back. We never receive it.

  2. The server only when it must

Word, Excel and PowerPoint to PDF need a full office suite, so those files are uploaded over HTTPS to our server, converted with LibreOffice and deleted within 15 minutes. Every server tool page says so clearly.

  3. No account, no catch

Every tool is free. You can sign in with Google if you'd like higher limits on server conversions, but you never need an account to edit or convert a PDF.

Yes. Every tool is free to use with no trial, no account and no limit on browser tools. Server conversions (Word, Excel and PowerPoint to PDF) have an hourly limit to keep the service fair for everyone. Signing in with Google raises it.

Not for most tools. Editing, signing, merging, splitting, compressing, OCR, passwords, redaction and converting PDFs to images or Office files all happen in your browser, and the file never leaves your device. Only Word, Excel and PowerPoint to PDF upload the file to our server, and those files are deleted within 15 minutes. Each tool page tells you which kind it is.

Only if you want one. When you download, there's a checkbox to add a small "Edited with WhyShared" line at the bottom of the page. Untick it and your PDF is saved with no mark at all.

Browser tools handle PDFs up to 100 MB. Very large or image-heavy files depend on your device's memory, so a desktop copes better than an older phone. Server conversions accept files up to 20 MB.

Yes. Every tool works in current versions of Chrome, Safari, Edge, Firefox and Samsung Internet on Android, iPhone, iPad, Windows, macOS and Linux. Nothing needs to be installed.

Yes. Open the PDF in Edit PDF, click a line of text and type. The original words are removed from the page and your new text is written in their place. A few PDFs store text in a way that can't be changed safely. For those, the editor covers the old text neatly and places your new text on top, and it tells you when it does this.

Yes, if you know the password. Tools ask for it when they open the file. To remove the password permanently, use Unlock PDF. We can't help bypass a password you don't have.
