A real PDF editor, not just a cover-up tool

Most free editors can only paste new text on top of the old. Here, when you click a line and retype it, the original words are taken out of the page's content and your new text is written in their place, in a matching size and color. Search, copy and screen readers then see the new wording, not the old.

The same workspace has every other editing tool: add text boxes, white out areas, highlight passages, draw, add comments and stamps, insert pictures, sign, redact and work with form fields. You can also rotate, reorder or delete pages from the sidebar before you save.

How to edit a PDF

  1. 1

    Open your PDF

Drop the file on the page or choose it from your device. Password-protected files ask for the password first.

  2. 2

Click the text you want to change

With Edit text selected, lines of text light up as you point at them. Click one and type. Press Esc or click elsewhere when you're done.

  3. 3

    Add anything else

Pick a tool from the toolbar to add text, images, shapes, highlights or a signature. Drag objects to move them and use the corner handles to resize.

  4. 4

    Save and download

Click Save and download. Your edited copy is saved to your device and the editor stays open in case you want to change more.

What you can do

  • Replace existing text

The old words are removed from the page, not hidden under a box, so the file says exactly what you see.

  • Matching style

Font size, weight and color are picked up from the original line, and the background color is sampled from the page.

  • Undo and redo

Every change can be undone with Ctrl+Z, right up to the moment you save.

  • Page tools built in

Rotate, move or delete pages from the thumbnail sidebar without switching tools.

Good to know

Text editing works line by line, which suits corrections, dates, names and figures. Rewriting whole paragraphs is easier in Word: use PDF to Word, edit there and convert back with Word to PDF.

Scanned pages are pictures of text, so there is nothing to click. Run OCR PDF first if you need searchable text, or use Whiteout and Add text to correct a scan. Replacement text uses Helvetica, Times or Courier, so a document set in an unusual typeface may look slightly different on the lines you change.

Edit PDF: frequently asked questions

Yes. Click a line of text, type your changes and download. There is no charge, no account and no watermark unless you choose to add one.

Yes, for the lines you edit. The editor rewrites the page so the old words are no longer in the file. In the rare case a PDF stores its text in a way that can't be changed safely, the old text is covered neatly instead and the save summary tells you so.

No. The editor runs entirely in your browser. Your file is read and saved on your own device.

The page is probably a scan or a photo, which has no real text. Use OCR PDF to recognize it, or cover mistakes with Whiteout and type over them.

Yes. Tap a line to edit it, and tap Show or hide options for colors and sizes. A larger screen is more comfortable for long documents.
